The Commune and The Initiative: A New and Exciting Place for Women in the Cannabis Industry
Amy Margolis is a 17 practicing attorney and founder of The Oregon Cannabis Association, the largest cannabis trade group in the United States, and recently announced the launch of The Commune and The Initiative.
Having realized the growing gender gap in the still new cannabis industry, Amy wanted there to be a place women could meet and network to close that gap and shatter the glass ceiling. The Commune is a 4,000 square foot, cannabis friendly space perfect for hosting any event, including cannabis infused dinners. It also has plenty of office and boardroom space available and is set to host business classes and bootcamps and incubator opportunities, which is perfect for a budding startup.
The Commune will also house Ms. Margolis’ brainchild and world’s first accelerator program specifically designed for women executives and entrepreneurs in the cannabis space called The Initiative.
The program was created to address the gender discrepancy and provide women with an equal opportunity to be successful in the ever growing and evolving cannabis industry. The Initiative is supported a truly amazing board of directors including; April Pride, Dr. Amanda Reiman, Dr. Janice Knox, Rick Turoczy, Emily Paxhia, Mowgli Holmes, AC Braddock, Glynis Olson, Katie Kiernan, Joshua Goldstein, and Carlos Perea. The Initiative also has support from their foundational sponsors iAnthus Capital and Miller Nash.
Ms. Margolis herself brings years of legal and cannabis industry experience to this exciting new venture. She has sat on almost every advisory committee for medical and adult use programs in her home state of Oregon. That expertise led her to advise other states on the implementation of adult-use legalization. Amy also consults abroad to help shape international cannabis laws.
In addition to her extensive legal expertise, Amy was named on the Political 100 and 50 Most Important Women in Cannabis by Cannabis Business Executive (CBE). She was also awarded the 2017 Portland Business Journal Women of Influence Award, was hailed as one of the 40 Under 40 to Watch in Oregon Politics and was referred to as the “Pot Power Woman” by Elle Magazine.

Most importantly, it is the goal of Ms. Margolis’ The Initiative and The Commune to bring balance to the most progressive industry in business today. Everyone involved strives to ensure that companies founded and run by women have the greatest chances of success.
“The Initiative will help provide the tools, mentoring, training and access to funding that women need to ensure their success in the cannabis space. The Initiative fills the gaps for immersive business programming and funding desperately needed,” says Margolis.
On Thursday, August 16th at 4pm, The Commune will host an industry open house. Attendees to the event will get a sneak peak at the application process for acceptance into The Initiative. They will also learn about the ongoing programs, space rental and incubation opportunities at The Commune. Starting September 1st, women cannabis leaders can enroll in The Initiative with innovators and product makers being preferred.
If you are unable to attend the open house but would still like to be considered for the accelerator program, check out the website for full details before filling out the contact form. Classes are offered in Oregon and even though it might be quite a distance, the education and tools provided during this program are invaluable, so don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity!
